Spyware, malware, and the like are the fastest growing methods of attack against Internet users. These should be considered more dangerous than viruses. At the current rate of discovery and growth, spyware and spyware related software will soon outnumber viruses as the number one threat to online users.

Spyware usually undetected and installed without users knowledge or permission. Originally created to allow merchandisers to target ads based on web visits, spware is a method of spying and tracking your activities.

Spyware is unaffected and unprotected by simple antivirus software.
Often spyware is Browser Based, while most viruses are Email based. Spyware software is often piggybacked onto a legitimate download or a legitimate software installation CD
Most commonly spware are cookies, but more and more, expect software to be installed and running in your operating system background!
Spyware can be difficult to locate, isolate, and remove. Some can even "recreate" themselves to come back after you have removed them
Some spyware can also burrow themselves to deep in your operating system, you cannot get rid of them without major "surgery" or reinstalling your operating system.
Combo spyware-viruses called "MalWare" are spreading very rapidly. This is spyware with malicious intent, including identity theft, keylogging to catch credit card and password information.

If you are online, you WILL encounter spyware. Even after you have cleaned your system, you will STILL encounter spyware. You cannot avoid it, but you can protect your computer, limit your exposure, and help monitor it as you are infected.
